  • The Dirty Tricks of McHenry County's Extremists
The Dirty Tricks of McHenry County's Extremists October 14, 2014 It is no secret that our community has its share of political thugs.  It is disconcerting, however, when one becomes the target of that activity.  In all my years as a resident, I have never had an enemy, or anyone who has had enmity against me, but now that I represent a particular "side" of the political spectrum, I have apparently garnered the wrath of certain "do badders" who, under cover of darkness, vandalize my signs with the express intention of influencing the outcome of the November 4th election.

  • Northwest Herald Candidate Questionnaire
The Northwest Herald will soon publish our responses to its "candidate questionairre".  Here are the questions, and my responses. Why are you running for County Board? I love serving my community. Most of my 37 years in McHenry County was spent as a volunteer for historic preservation organizations.   I was first elected to public office in 2012, so I consider these first two years as educational preparation for my next term. It takes time to learn one's way around county government. I believe I have performed well on the Transportation, Planning & Development and Legislative Committees. I have much to offer, and have proven to work well with both other board members and county staff.   My exposure to the intricacies of county business like the budget and strategic planning have intensified my desire to be more fully engaged, and have enabled me to develop a more complete vision of where…

Last Thursday a special session of the Legislative Committee heard a presentation by Elizabeth Kessler, the Executive Director of the McHenry County Conservation District.  Ms. Kessler asked for our support of Illinois Senate bills 3341 and 3342 (sponsored by Senator Pam Althoff). These bills amend the State's "Conservation District" Act to seek additional funding authority for property maintenance and operational costs.  The Committee was hesitant to sign on to support of these bills until we know how this will impact property taxes for citizens.

Not to belabor a point, but voter turnout for the 2014 Primary Election was HORRIBLE.  Less than 17% of the 204,000+ eligible voters in McHenry County bothered to cast a ballot.  No doubt there are plenty of reasons to not get out and do your civic duty, but if over 80% of our voting population doesn't participate, that means that about 34,000 people are dictating the future of McHenry County... YOUR FUTURE.  There is no excuse for apathy.  Democracy is not a spectator sport. You have been given a voice by the blood of many patriots.  Use it.

I have never been wholly supportive of the selection of our County Board Chair by popular vote.  Before this vote, I was against the creation of a "County Executive" for the same reasons.  This referendum will create a new County Board position because the Chairman will no longer be a member of the Board.  Advocates for 'smaller government' should be outraged at this outcome.  Anyone who voted 'yes' on this referendum need not complain to me about how high their taxes are, because this is the very decision which will ensure MORE money must be spent for County Government.  It wasn't broke...why did you fix it?

Our outgoing McHenry County Clerk has decided that same-sex couples must wait until the 'official' date of June 1 to apply for and receive marriage licenses.  This is in stark contrast to the State Attorney General, Lisa Madigan, who has publicly stated that she encourages County Clerks throughout the state to issue licenses immediately.  I have offered the following commentary at our last County Board meeting, in the hope that Katherine Schultz will reconsider her rigid interpretation of this ruling.  Give it a listen!

  • New Park-n-Ride Facility
A NEW PARKING FACILITY FOR OUR COMMUNITY If you can't make it to the ribbon cutting at Route 31 and Virginia Road this Tuesday at 9:00 am, please note that the NEW PARK & RIDE is now open to the public for our transit ride sharing needs in Southeast McHenry County.  It's a concept that is catching on all across the country, allowing a safe place to meet and carpool.

  • McHenry County 2014 Budget Vote November 20
The 2014 budget for McHenry County will go before the full Board for approval next Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm. The proposed budget can be reviewed here.  Please take the time to look at this most important document, and observe how your tax dollars are being allocated for the next fiscal year.  Overall, our County is in good financial condition, well-managed and fiscally conservative.  We have refused our levy increase for the second year in a row and have presented a balanced budget for 2014.

  • Harmony Road School Conundrum
November 14, 2013 At our last Transportation committee meeting, I revealed that IDOT would pay to relocate the Harmony Road School. An article in today's NWH gives details on that proposal. IDOT MAY pay, or they still may demolish the building. There are no guarantees on the preservation of this beautiful structure, even though Kurt Begalka, MC Historical Society president, has worked long and hard to that end.  We need to find a new place for this building, and FAST.  Please use your personal network of friends and aquaintances to inquire about land on which the Harmony Road School may be permanently re-located.  Thanks.

Green Bay Packers respond to challenge,Tyrann Mathieu Jersey resume winning ways Before the kickoff to Sunday's much anticipated matchup between the team that led the NFC North at the time -- Minnesota -- and the team that leads it today -- Green Bay -- a Packers official told me why Aaron Rodgers and Co. should emerge victorious. Though he didn't put it in terms as clichéd as this,Peyton Manning Jersey quite simply, their backs were against a wall. The Packers are one of those stoic,Ezekiel Elliott Jersey unflinching organizations, from the top (general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy) down. There isn't a screaming hype man of an assistant coach or a management figure that's going to publicly or privately call anyone to the carpet for not playing well.Eli Manning Jersey As the Packers official put it, they work through things in their own way. After collecting their third straight "L" -- against Detroit -- last week,Clay Matthews Jersey the Packers started hearing, from every angle, not only about what was wrong with them,Luke Kuechly Jersey but that the Vikings were better. That they were tougher. They had more trending strengths than Green Bay.Rob Gronkowski Jersey That was what the Packers needed. Green Bay went to Minnesota, where its defense overwhelmed the Vikings.Russell Wilson Jersey The Packers' maligned receivers made plays they hadn't been making over the past month. Eddie Lacy ran with purpose again. And Green Bay won,Pittsburgh Steelers Jersey 30-13. "Yes, we were challenged,Cincinnati Bengals Jersey" said wide receiver James Jones, following his six-catch, 109-yard, one-touchdown performance against the Vikings -- a performance he completed while rocking an un-Belichickian hoodie. The Packers weren't pushed so much by the Vikings as they were by circumstance. Green Bay was vulnerable because it had let itself slip. However, instead of going out of character, perhaps by doing something like taking play-calling duties back from assistant head coach Tom Clements, McCarthy got back to the basics
